The Parts of Yourself You Were Taught to Hide

This testimonial has stuck with me because it talks about a side of boudoir that we don’t always talk about: the shame some women have been taught to attach to their own sexuality. We can spend years believing that being sexy, enjoying our bodies, or even wanting to see ourselves that way means something negative about who we are. And sometimes, the things we judge most harshly are the things we haven’t given ourselves permission to explore. Her experience wasn’t just about taking beautiful photos. It was about questioning those old beliefs and deciding they didn’t get to define her anymore.

“Slutty. Wrong. Dirty. Attention seeking. Embarrassing. Gross. Conceited. Disgusting. Whore.”

These are the words that would come to me as I would scroll past other women’s boudoir photos in the past. Evidently they are also the same words that would come to me as I would think of myself as a “sexual being”.

For me, choosing to do these pictures was about 𝕨𝕖𝕝𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕒𝕔𝕔𝕖𝕡𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 and even a little bit about 𝕖𝕟𝕔𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕟𝕘 a side of me that I have always shut down. That I have always felt ashamed of. A part of me that was so much not allowed. Sexuality? Nope, not me. That has always been the belief in my head. So this- this was about taking another 𝕓𝕣𝕒𝕧𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕡 completely out of my comfort zone and more into 𝕊𝕖𝕝𝕗 𝕃𝕠𝕧𝕖.
And what were the words that came to me when I saw my own photos-

“Damn. Holy Shit. Omg. Wow. Is that me?”

Seeing them makes me feel Stunned. They make me feel Confident. Sexy. Secure. Like a 𝕎𝕠𝕞𝕒𝕟- A way I’ve never seen or allowed myself to be before. I can’t stop looking at how beautiful they are, and somehow my insecurities are muted.

Isn’t it amazing how we grow so much in this thing called life. Never in a million years would I ever think I’d do something like this, along with so many other new things lately in my life. (Tap Dance, Reading, Painting, Mediumship, Going back to school, Meditation, Knowing & having a relationship with something Higher). The possibilities are endless once you 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕥 𝕝𝕠𝕧𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕗 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕗𝕠𝕝𝕝𝕠𝕨𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕥.

So, for some of you who may have those judging words come to you as you scroll past these pics- thats ok- I feel you. I used to feel the same, but I’ve learned that sometimes what we judge most harshly in others is really what we haven’t yet accepted in ourselves.

If you’ve been teetering on the idea of a boudoir shoot- I vote do it. Take the leap towards loving even more parts of you.
*(And find a photographer that you can share your concerns, fears and insecurities with, someone who will let you be in charge of what’s being seen and what’s not. Someone you feel safe with *Brin 😉

ℕ𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣 𝕤𝕒𝕪 “𝕀’𝕕 ℕ𝕖𝕧𝕖𝕣”

This is why I believe boudoir can be so much bigger than photos. Sometimes it gives you a safe place to meet a version of yourself you’ve kept at arm’s length for years. Sexy doesn’t have to mean dirty. Confidence doesn’t mean conceited. Loving your body doesn’t mean you’re asking for anyone else’s attention. You’re allowed to be a mother, a wife, a professional, a caregiver, a million different things — and still be a sexual woman. Those parts of you don’t cancel each other out. They’re all yours. And maybe the version of yourself you swore you’d “never” be is actually one worth getting to know.

Every woman who walks through these doors has a different reason for being here, and every experience looks a little different. If you’d like to hear directly from more women who have stepped outside their comfort zones and done this for themselves, you can read more of their stories on the Testimonials page. Their words will always explain what this experience can be better than I ever could.
